"Life is mysterious at times. The door or stairway leading to nowhere, abandoned civilizations left in ruins, piles of bones with no story to tell… The ambiance, sense, and phenomena of this mystery is what I am attempting to capture. Also, I am striving to connect with this mystery, to discover and reveal what transpires within the medium of clay.
As I work, bones appear and protrude, wings land upon the surface and punctures happen. Then, caves are present, rattles rattle and small stones set themselves. After that, peeks of light here and there, grooves groove and blanched skin cover horns, tusks and waves.
Somehow it is within the nature of the material I use that yields and inspires this type of work. I approach the clay as a sculptor/carver would-by applying the elimination process. This enables me to explore what is happening and to make quick decisions. The clay body is also simple to repair and quite forgiving.
This process stems from many years of watching and assisting my mother with her stone sculptures. I also apply what I can remember from teachers, instructors, other artists and friends. “Push this out a little, go a little deeper-see what you get and juxtapose that a little more.” With these tricks in my pocket resonating as I work, it is easier to continue to explore.
The finished work is comprised of ancient/naturalistic/architectural elements that hint of a small story, a tribute to life and a gift from the mysterious reign." -- Abbie Weinberg
