During the 1980's she worked with a residential architect designing, building and installing leaded glass windows, built broken tile and ceramic counter tops, and other residential decorative appointments. Before settling into her current mixed media pieces, January explored a number of media including; serigraphs, color pencils, oil and acrylic, stained/leaded glass, and broken tile ceramics. The many influences of these processes can be seen in her latest series, available through haleARTS.
“I always have my eyes open for inspiration for a new piece. My first layer is usually cardboard from a cracker or cookie box. From there I build layers of color and textures with hand made papers, tissue paper and also hand paint torn canvas. Nail heads, thread and candy wrapper foil and glazes transform into planes of color or deep shadows. Having a collection of these items, allow me to revolutionize these unique and discarded items— giving them a new story to tell. ” – January Garabedian
