“I rarely plan shoots ahead of time. This helps me stay flexible, creatively responding to my circumstances and making adjustments on the fly as I encounter unexpected moments of inspiration. My best subjects are often unanticipated, revealed to me during personal communion with the spaces I happen to be moving through.
My visual language is eclectic, drawing upon landscape, architecture, environmental portraiture, abstract and surrealist genres. I have been primarily influenced by the work of Ansel Adams, Julius Schulman, Michael Kenna, Hengki Koentjoro, Sebastiao Salgado, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Henri van Noordenburg. Working with the black and white aesthetic allows me to more easily communicate emotion and atmosphere in my images. I am especially drawn to the evocative power of high contrast compositions that juxtapose crushing blacks against bright whites.
The sensibility of my work is driven by storytelling in the black and white fine art tradition. My creative process is fundamentally a personal exploration of the energy and mood of spaces. I hope to visualize the mysterious beauty of natural and built environments, transferring the emotions and imaginings they stir within me into the image. Ultimately, I aspire for my work to transcend graphic impact, inviting viewers into a subtle and sustained dialogue.”
